The origin of the name Rupiah

As we know, Rupiah (Rp) is the currency of Indonesia. The name is taken from the Indian currency called rupees.Long time ago, People of place, now known as Indonesia, was using Dutch guilders since 1610 until 1817, when the Dutch East Indies guilder was introduced.

First time the rupiah name used officially is in the era of DAI Nippon during World War II. After the war ended, the Jawa Bank, a pioneer of Bank Indonesia, issued Rupiah, and the Allies issued a Gulden Nica. Meanwhile in other areas in the region now called Indonesia, money associated with guerrilla activity circulated in the community.

On 2 November 1949 rupiah defined as national currency. In Riau and Papua archipelago, still used other currencies at that time, and in 1964 and 1971 Rupiah used there.

In Timor Timur, Rupiah was used from 1976 to 2001. But Since 2001 until now Timor Timur uses U.S. dollars.
